Yesterday morning, in Wellesley a young boy was struck by an SUV while riding his bike near Woodlawn Ave and Oakland Street. He's expected to be okay but was taken to the hospital for further examination.
Neighbors described exactly the unsafe roadway conditions we hear about in Needham all the time. One mother summed it up simply: kids are going to be out on their bikes and scooters, and there's only so much a parent can do. While they are describing Wellesley here, they could easily be describing a number of different places in Needham, too.
Good street design comes down to two things: slowing vehicles down and physically separating people from cars. The best street designs don't rely on drivers choosing to be careful, or cyclists riding perfectly, they anticipate mistakes. Safe streets make the safe choice the only easy one.
Places that design streets this way have a third fewer road deaths per capita than the U.S average, not because they are better drivers, but because their roads don't give them the chance to make a small mistake into a fatal one.
At the end of the day, the only thing that will make drivers slow down and keep non-drivers safe is design that forces them to slow down.
Safe Streets Needham exists to bring together a community of people who care about these issues, and to raise awareness about the growing problem of traffic violence in our community. Together, we can push for real change as a community.
