Envision Needham Center Survey Results
Good morning all,
Popular belief is that Needham residents prioritize traffic and parking over bike and pedestrian projects; however, this survey showed that Needham also cares about safer streets for pedestrians, better bike lanes, and streetscape improvements.
In Summary:
- 61% of residents currently have a level of support for the 2-lane plans
So what did we learn from this survey?
-
There is much greater diversity of thought than commonly understood. While there are those opposed to changes, there are also many people excited about the project and the opportunity for change
-
Like other places, voices that oppose projects like this one dominate public meetings and the media, while there is far more support than people realize
-
The most engaged residents likely dominated the survey (88% of respondents had engaged previously), meaning many supporters may still be unheard (ENC slidedeck, slide 4)
-
- 50+% of respondents currently support the 2-lane plans, meaning there is significant support for the project; more people indicated some support for the 2-lane plans than indicated no support
- Approximately 48% of businesses indicated a level of support for the 2-lane plans, far more than discourse has suggested
What are the details of the survey?
-
4-lane proponents care about:
-
Parking
-
Traffic flow
-
Economic development
-
-
2-lane proponents care about:
-
Street and urban design
-
Wider sidewalks for pedestrians and businesses
-
Traffic calming
-
Outdoor dining for restaurants
-
Community
-
Economic development
-
Beautification and landscape improvements in front of businesses
-
Things to remember:
- Traffic delays from the 2-lane plans will only occur during rush hour, and the parking supply will increase (something not possible with the 4-lane plan)
- The 2-lane plans can improve the driving experience downtown by reducing traffic stresses (such as double parking and limited visibility). Additionally, improved facilities may encourage neighbors to walk or bike instead of driving, freeing up more parking!
Next Steps:
- We need your help! Email members of the Select Board
- If you haven't talked to the Select Board, NOW IS THE TIME
- Email: selectboard@needhamma.gov
- Reiterate that the community benefits of the 2-lane options far outweigh the negatives
-
Reiterate that it is a once-in-a-generation opportunity
- Spread the word with friends, family, and neighbors. Recommend they sign up for our email list
- The committee will finalize and send a report to the Select Board
- The Select Board will vote in the coming months on how to move forward
Thanks,
Aidan, Nick, Corbin, and Nadia
